QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT "PASSA E VAI" CONTACTLESS PAYMENT SYSTEM

How many fares does the system have?
Only two:

  • One zone for those moving within the same zone. For example only within Bergamo City
  • More zones for those who  travel also in different zones. For example from Il Caravaggio Orio al Serio Airport to Bergamo station.

Where are the "Passa e Vai" validators located?
"Passa e Vai" validators can be found on all vehicles travelling within ATB and TEB network:

  • ATB Consorzio buses
  • Teb tramways
  • at the turnstiles of Bergamo City and San Vigilio funicular stations.

Do I have to "tap" only when I buy a ticket?
No, you need to tap (bring the card close to the validator and select the fare) each time you change the means of transport. The system will charge a new ticket only when the previous one expires.

What happens if I do not select the fare zone?
If after bringing the card close to the validator, you do not select the zone, the system automatically charges the minimum fare, that means a One Zone ticket.

How do I know if the payment was successful?
If the purchase is successful, the validator will beep and the display will show the writing "Buon viaggio" anche the ticket features (zones, duration and price).

May I switch from a One zone to a More zone ticket within the same validity period?
Yes, the system allows you to switch from One zone to More zone ticket if the new validation takes place within the validity of the ticket.
For example: if I select the One zone ticket (validity 75 minutes) and 30 minutes later I change my mind and I tap again selecting the More zone ticket the system will only charge me € 3.50 (instead of € 1.70 + € 3.50) and the duration will be increased to 120 minutes.

When does the ticket expire?
The One zone ticket expires after 75 minutes, and the More zone ticket after 120 minutes.

What must I show in the event of a check?
At the request of inspectors, the passenger must provide, in addition to personal details, the last 4 digits of the physical or the virtual card associated with the smartphone.
In the second case, depending on the app used, the customer displays the following wording within the app itself:

  • "Virtual Account Number" for Google Pay
  • "Device ID number" for Apple Pay
  • "Digital card number" for Samsung Pay.

The data provided is used exclusively for payment verification and is not stored in any way by the control devices used.

Where can I consult the list of purchases made with the system?
By registering with the "Portale del viaggiatore" you can check the list of your payments and choose to receive an email for each 'tap' with the related ticket features.

What happens, if I do not have enough money on my card?
If the credit card amount is insufficient, the system will deny the access and will not allow further purchases. To reactivate your credit card you must register with the "Portale del viaggiatore" you can check the list of your payments, receive an email for each 'tap' with the related ticket features and pay any outstanding amount.

What should I do if my card is not accepted by the validator?
If the card is not accepted for any reason, the validator will display the writing "carta rifiutata – ACCESSO NEGATO".
In order to travel you must purchase a ticket using another payment method (ticket offices, ATB Mobile app, on-board red ticket vending machine).

Why does the validator show the message "carta rifiutata – ACCESSO NEGATO"?
The validator shows this message when the contactless card is not enabled for payment, is not contactless, does not belong to one of the enabled circuits, does not have enough money to carry out the transaction or if it has been blocked, has expired or deteriorated.

How is the privacy of data guaranteed in the event of checks?
Card and cardholder data are not stored in any way. The control device shows only the ticket features.

Are there any additional costs compared to the ticket purchased at the ticket offices?
No, there is no additional cost or bank commission charged to customers.

Which cards does the system accept?
The system accepts VISA, Mastercard, American Express and Maestro contactless debit, credit and prepaid cards.

May I also pay with my mobile phone?
Yes, by registering your card with Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay, you can use both smartphones and smartwatches, as long as they are NFC-enabled.

How can I recognise a contactless card?
Contactless cards are generally identified by the three-wave symbol (as shown in the "Passa e Vai" logo).

With one card is it possible to buy tickets for more than one person?
No,
with one card it is not possible to purchase a ticket for more than one person. Each passenger must have a card.

What do I have to do if the validator is out of order?
Each means of transport have more than one validator.
If they are all out of order, you must purchase a ticket using another payment method (ticket offices, ATB Mobile app, on-board red ticket vending machine).

Why am I charged for a different amount at the end of the day than the ticket I purchased?
At the first daily 'tap', the customer receives a pre-authorization request of a variable amount (up to a maximum of 7.00 euros) depending on the credit card circuit and on the reference bank. During the next days, the correct amount is charged, calculated according to the best fare.
